ASIC Cooling in 2026: Air, Hydro and Immersion — Which to Choose

Air vs hydro (Hydro) vs immersion (IMM) ASIC cooling in 2026: noise, density, efficiency, real Antminer S21/S23 Hydro models and advice from Trade M.

The cooling type of an ASIC miner determines not only noise level but also hashrate, board lifespan, and whether you can run the hardware at home or only in an industrial mining hotel. In 2026, manufacturers ship air, hydro, and immersion (IMM) versions of the same models in parallel. Let's break down the differences and when paying more is worth it.

Three types of ASIC cooling

  • Air — classic fans blow through the hashboard heatsinks. Cheapest, most common, loudest.
  • Hydro (liquid) — coolant circulates through water blocks on the chips and dumps heat to an external dry cooler. Quieter, denser, higher hashrate.
  • Immersion (IMM) — the board is fully submerged in a dielectric fluid. Maximum density and lifespan, but requires a tank and infrastructure.

Air cooling

The standard for home and small farms. Pros: price, easy maintenance, no extra infrastructure. Cons: 70–80 dB noise (like a running vacuum cleaner) and limited overclocking — on air the chip hits its thermal limit sooner.

A typical example is the Antminer S21: 200 TH/s at 3550 W, ~17.5 J/TH efficiency. For home use, an air model almost always has to go in a separate room or be soundproofed.

Hydro cooling

Hydro versions deliver a much higher hashrate from the same class of chips because liquid removes heat more efficiently than air, allowing higher clocks without throttling.

ModelHashratePowerEfficiency
Antminer S23 Hyd 3U1160 TH/s11020 W~9.5 J/TH
Antminer S21E XP Hyd 3U860 TH/s11180 W~13 J/TH
Antminer S21 XP Hyd473 TH/s5676 W~12 J/TH

Hydro pros: quieter operation, 2–3× higher rack density, best efficiency in the lineup. Cons: needs an external cooling loop (dry cooler, pumps), higher entry cost, more complex installation. This is data-center and mining-hotel hardware, not apartment gear.

All current Hydro models are in the SHA-256 ASIC catalog.

Immersion cooling (IMM)

In immersion, the board sits in a non-conductive dielectric fluid. Heat is removed evenly across the whole surface, so chips run in a more stable regime and retain lifespan longer.

IMM examples: Antminer S23 IMM (368 TH/s, 4048 W, ~11 J/TH) and Antminer S21XP IMM (300 TH/s, 4050 W). Immersion offers the highest placement density and lowest noise, but requires tanks, heat exchangers, and scheduled fluid maintenance.

For home — air or compact models. For scaling — Hydro or immersion in a mining-hotel environment that already has the infrastructure.

Cooling and the mining hotel

Hydro and IMM hardware is nearly impossible to run correctly at home: it needs cooling loops, fluid filtration, and stable industrial power. That's why such models usually live in a mining hotel — with ready infrastructure, 24/7 monitoring, and an industrial tariff. If you plan a 5000+ W flagship, budget not only the ASIC price but also cooling and hosting.

Before buying a used Hydro model, always pressure-test the loop for leaks — details in our ASIC repair and diagnostics guide.

Conclusion

Cooling type is a trade-off between noise, density, efficiency, and infrastructure. Air suits getting started and home use; Hydro and immersion are for serious scaling with higher hashrate and lower noise — but only with the right conditions.
