ASIC Miner Repair: Common Failures and When to Call a Technician
Common ASIC miner failures: hashboards, power supplies, fans. What you can check yourself and when you need a service center.
An ASIC miner is a complex piece of industrial equipment, and sooner or later all hardware needs attention. Here are the most common failures, what you can check yourself, and when to take the unit to a service center.
Most Common Failures
1. Reduced Hashrate (mining below rated output)
Causes:
- One or more hashboards have failed
- Overheating due to clogged fans or heatsinks
- Outdated or corrupted firmware
- Pool or network connectivity issues
What to check yourself: logs in the miner's web interface (IP → dashboard), board temperatures, fan status (spinning, no unusual noise).
2. Miner Won't Start or Shuts Off Immediately
Causes:
- Faulty power supply (PSU)
- Short circuit or damage to the control board
- Faulty power cables
What to check: verify the outlet and cable work; try a different PSU if available.
3. Overheating and Thermal Shutdown
Causes:
- Clogged fans or heatsinks (dust buildup)
- Failed fan (not spinning or spinning slowly)
- Inadequate ventilation in the room
- Dried-out thermal paste
What to do: blow out fans and heatsinks with compressed air, check ambient temperature, ensure airflow is unobstructed.
4. Miner Is Detected But a Hashboard Is Missing from the Dashboard
Classic sign of a failed hashboard. Requires professional diagnostics and repair — chip replacement or trace restoration can only be done in a service center environment.
5. Network Errors or Miner Not Responding on IP
Causes:
- Control board failure
- Damaged Ethernet port
- IP address conflict on the network
What You Can Do Yourself
- Reboot the miner and review logs
- Blow out fans and heatsinks
- Check all cables and connectors
- Update firmware to the latest version
- Verify pool configuration
When You Need a Service Center
If basic checks don't resolve the issue, contact a technician. Attempting to disassemble hashboards without proper tools and experience often leads to greater damage and cost.
Bring it in when:
- Hashrate is reduced and doesn't recover after reboot
- A hashboard is missing from the dashboard
- Miner won't power on
- Visible burn marks or heat damage on boards
