How to Choose an ASIC Miner in 2026: The Complete Guide
A step-by-step guide to choosing an ASIC miner in 2026: coin, algorithm, tariff, hashrate, cooling and payback. Advice from Trade M.
Choosing an ASIC miner comes down to a few key decisions: which coin to mine, what your electricity tariff is, and your budget. Let's go through each one so you don't overpay and buy hardware that actually pays back.
1. Pick the coin and algorithm
Every ASIC is built for a specific algorithm, and therefore for specific coins:
- SHA-256 — Bitcoin. The largest and most stable market. This is the Antminer S21/S23 line.
- Scrypt — Litecoin and Dogecoin at the same time (merged mining). See Scrypt ASICs.
- KHeavyHash — Kaspa, one of the fastest networks. That's the Antminer KS7.
- Equihash — Zcash. Dedicated ASICs for ZEC.
Start with the coin you believe in for the long run — the rest of the configuration follows from it.
2. Assess your electricity tariff
The tariff is the main driver of profitability. A miner with great hashrate can run at a loss if power is expensive. Work out the cost of 1 kWh for your situation, and be honest about how many hours a day the hardware will run.
If your own tariff is too high, consider hosting in a mining hotel: an industrial tariff materially improves your margin.
3. Hashrate, power and energy efficiency
Don't chase hashrate alone. The key metric is energy efficiency (watts per unit of hashrate). Newer generations (S21, S23) deliver more hashrate per watt, so at the same tariff the profit is higher than with older models.
Compare models across all three together: hashrate, power and price.
4. Cooling: air, hydro or immersion
- Air — simpler to set up, suited to home and small farms.
- Hydro — higher hashrate and quieter operation, but needs cooling infrastructure.
- Immersion — for industrial sites and maximum overclocking.
Choose based on your hosting conditions, not the other way around.
5. Budget and payback
Always calculate payback before buying. Enter the hashrate, power, your tariff and the hardware price into the profitability calculator — it shows daily profit and payback time at the live rate.
6. Where to buy and what about warranty
Buy only from an official supplier with a warranty and pre-shipment testing. Trade M is an official Bitmain Antminer and Avalon supplier: a price fixed at the time of order, delivery across Ukraine, a 6-month warranty and firmware tuned to your tariff.
